Anti-Human Trafficking
Youth Program

In December 2020, The Women’s Centre Grey Bruce was selected by the Ontario government to launch an anti-human trafficking youth program in Grey Bruce, through a $1.3 million  Anti-Human Trafficking Community Support Fund.

Human trafficking is an under-reported crime but it is recognized as one of the fastest-growing crimes worldwide and Grey Bruce is not immune. Local law enforcement agencies received sixty-six Human Trafficking Calls for Services between 2015 and 2019, with forty-four occurring in the last two years alone.

Owen Sound Police Acting-Inspector, Mike Daze, said, “…human trafficking is not just an urban issue” and, “…the only way we can really move forward in trying to prevent this from happening to our young people who are being victimized” is “to work together collaboratively across all agencies”. Owen Sound Police Chief, Craig Ambrose, recently said, "Owen Sound and Grey and Bruce counties aren’t immune to human trafficking . . . we wanted to work together in order to improve our investigative capacity and our awareness as well as the community’s awareness so we get reports of suspicious behaviour (about) instances of human trafficking related to forced labour and forced work in the sex-trade”.
